Announcing the Fall 2013 Get Real Winners
Students often wonder how algebra is used outside of class and why they really need to learn chemistry. The CK-12 Get Real Competition took that curiosity and challenged students.
We challenged students to choose a math or science concept and demonstrate an
application of that concept in the real world.
We received hundreds of creative, thoughtful and fun entries from students of all ages. It was incredibly difficult to narrow it down, but with the help of our official judges, we did!
We are extremely excited to announce the top 3 winners for the first time today!
These 3 winning entries exhibited thourough understanding of the math or science concept, creative application in the real world, excellent impact and stunning clarity. Each winning entrant will receive an electronic device of their choosing in addition to a collection of devices for their classroom. These devices will become property of the school and will be great resources for learning for years to come.
Now, what you've all been waiting for... The winners!
In first place is a submission titled, "The Diffusion of Germs Occurs Faster in a Hot Classroom" from Tooele Jr. High School in Tooele, Utah. These students saw an opportunity in the heat of their portable classroom and turned it into a winning Get Real entry using the science concept of diffusion. This group of students showed excellent teamwork and understanding of concepts to prove that students pass illness quicker in a warm classroom than they do in a cooler classroom. Our second place winners submitted an entry titled, "Electromagnetic Generators." This team of two from Williamsburg Intermediate creatively demonstrated why we need generators to power our devices including phones, lights and even stoves. Watch their video submission now.
And finally, in third place is Pacific Rim International School in San Mateo, California for a submission called, "Compost Gone Viral! Their video used chemistry and earth science concepts to demonstrate the proper way to compost. They shared things to watch out for when composting using a compilation of creative videos.
